A used electric car raises an obvious question: if the battery is several years old, will the car still travel anything like the distance it did when new?

The short answer is that battery capacity can reduce gradually with age and use. The more useful answer is that the amount varies, and age on its own does not tell you the whole story.

Battery degradation is gradual

An EV battery is made from many cells. Over time, chemical changes mean the pack cannot store quite as much usable energy as it could when new.

That does not normally mean a sudden jump from a healthy battery to a useless one. It is usually a gradual change.

If a battery that originally offered 60 kWh of usable energy later holds a little less, the car can still be perfectly serviceable; it simply has less energy available for each full charge.

Mileage is not the only factor

People often assume the highest-mileage car must have the weakest battery. It is not quite that simple.

Battery temperature, charging habits, how often the battery spends time at very high or very low states of charge, the chemistry used by the manufacturer and the battery-management system can all play a part.

Two same-age cars can therefore have different battery health.

Weather can look like degradation

A car that appears to have lost range in January may recover much of it when the weather turns mild.

Cold weather affects efficiency and cabin heating uses energy. That seasonal change should not automatically be treated as permanent battery degradation.

This is one reason a single dashboard range prediction is a poor battery-health test.

What should you check on a used EV?

Look at the whole picture:

  • battery-health information if the car can provide it;
  • remaining manufacturer battery warranty;
  • real energy consumption over meaningful journeys;
  • charging behaviour;
  • any diagnostic or battery report supplied with the car.

A proper battery-health measurement is more useful than simply comparing the dashboard range with the number in an old brochure.

For now, treat age as one part of the used-EV picture rather than assuming an older EV automatically has a poor battery.
